Sunday Six: Week 49

Okay, so I'm late again, but at least it's here! I will preface last week's Sunday Six by saying that this might be my weakest set of the year. I was just not feeling that great last week, and creativity was not flowing. So, that being said, here is last week's Sunday Six.


Over Thanksgiving, my Dad and I sat and went through part of his vinyl collection. I hope to get to look through the rest of it the next time I'm at his house. He tells me there are original Beatles albums. I'm determined to find them, and confiscate them for my own. Here are a few of my albums. My collection is definitely small, but it'll grow.

Sunday Six: Week 33 (Bright Lights Edition)

This week I have a Recap Six all from my long weekend in Fort Lauderdale.


I played with light trails during some of our drives around South Florida. I tried to pick things with lots of colors and shapes.

Sunday Six: Week 12

Another Recap Six for this week. Just like many of my recaps, all but one of the pictures was taken today.


A dandelion. There were about 5 of these growing in my friend's yard. However, when I got in position to take some photos, one of his dogs would come and knock the flower.


A quick snap of the "King" building as I drove downtown today. This tower has a "Queen" building standing beside it. At some point, I'll snap a picture of both of them together.


Another dandelion, but this one is nice and yellow.


The Ferris Wheel at the Atlanta Fair. I really wish the tree hadn't got in my way.

Finally, a photo of the stage at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre. Wednesday night I saw "Monty Python's Spamalot." It was great!

So Much To Say

Yesterday was the big show I've been very excited about. The Allman Brothers Band and the Dave Matthews Band concert at Piedmont Park. It was great! The weather was outstanding. It was warm during the late afternoon, but once the sun set it was perfect. I swear, there were way more than 50,000 people there.

We were able to plop our blanket down in what ended up being the middle of the crowd. We were in a good position to see all of the screens, but far enough that the bands looked really small.

The Allman Brothers Band came on a few minutes late, which was great for us, because we were running a bit late ourselves. They played some really good songs, Hot 'lanta, Statesboro Blues, Hoochie Coochie Man, Midnight Rider, One Way Out, and did Whipping Post as their encore. I was not pleased that they ended their set without playing Melissa. That was totally made up for later. The band sounded great, and Gregg Allman's voice sounded great, too.

The stage setup was nice. There was one large screen on stage, behind the performers, then two screens high, beside the stage. There was also a high screen in the middle of the meadow.

DMB played a really good set. Warren Hayes jammed out with the band on What Would You Say, and Gregg Allman came out and performed Melissa with them. That was completely wonderful, it sounded so amazing hearing both of them singing the lyrics. Dave said it was one of his favorite songs ever written. I liked Cornbread a lot better with the live band, than just the acoustic version on the new Radio City CD. It was a lot of fun. Don't Drink the Water sounded really, really good. I thought it sounded much better than a couple of other live versions I've seen and heard. The series of So Much to Say, Too Much, and Warehouse were a lot of fun. Once we heard So Much to Say, we knew what was coming up next. He also played his new single Eh Hee. I'd not heard it yet, but liked it. I actually grabbed it from iTunes this morning.

It had been several years since I'd seen DMB perform. I saw them several times when I was living in Nashville. I really think this was the best performance I've seen. The crowd was great, the sound was wonderful and it looked like they were all having a lot of fun on stage.

My Date with Pete Yorn . . .

First, no, it wasn't really a date, it was a special show sponsored by Atlanta's 92.9 DaveFM! There were about 40 people in the audience, so it was nice and intimate. Pete came out and sang 2 songs, did a Q&A with the audience, and then played 4 more songs. His voice sounded terrific, and his acoustic guitar sounded nice, too. He was really cool! During the Q&A he talked about how weird it felt to have written a song that was on the Album of the Year (this would be The DixieChicks album), and also said the female that he was influenced by the most was Chrissy from The Pretenders. That was a nice choice I thought! The Pretenders are very cool!

Afterwards, I stuck around for a bit and was able to speak with Pete for a few minutes and have my CDs signed (pictured above). He was very sweet and seemed a bit shy, but was so nice. It was so much fun.

Earlier this morning I went down to the ING Health Expo to pick up my race packet and wander around the booths. TrainStrong had a booth so I visited with them for a bit. Got lots of protein bar samples, magazines, a running hat, an ING jacket and shorts, posters . . . there was all kinds of stuff!

I've got everything ready to go in the morning except for filling my water bottles. I'm excited! I'm staying around for a bit after the race to hang out with the TrainStrong group. Other than that, I'll do my best to get online and update you all on how the race went!

Wish me luck! 13.1 will be my longest run yet!

I won! I won!

I am a fan of Pete Yorn. That being said, I was very sad when I discovered that the night he was playing in Atlanta was the night before the ING Half-Marathon. This meant, of course, that I couldn't go. I have to be up early Sunday morning, and staying out late is certainly not conducive to that. However, my favorite Atlanta Radio station 92.9 Dave FM announced last week that Pete Yorn was coming in for their "Circle of Friends." This is a "win your way in" thing, so I've been constantly trying to win since they announced it.

So far, I'd been getting nothing besides a busy signal. That, however, changed today. I called in trying to win by answering a Matt Kearney trivia question, but I missed it . . . barely. Sully told me I was so close, but not exact. Darn! Later in the afternoon, Sully asked for caller 19 . . . I dialed and it rang and rang and rang and then disconnected. Then, I started getting busy signals. I decided to try one last time. It rang . . . and Sully answered! I won passes into the Circle of Friends! I'm super excited because this is the only way I was going to be able to see him while he was in Atlanta. So, sometime after Saturday I shall have a Pete Yorn story, and hopefully some Pete Yorn pictures!

A funny thing happened . . .

I was visited at work today by a sales rep for an office supply company. We had previously talked and he was coming in to work up an order of supplies. As we were talking about music and other general stuff, I mentioned one of my favorite bands Self. Most people I meet aren't familiar with Self as they were a local band from the Nashville/Murfreesboro area. They had two fairly big songs in the late 1990s, "Cannon" and "So Low", "Cannon" being the most popular. The lead singer now does production work in L.A. and the band recorded "Stay Home" which was on the Shrek soundtrack. Anyway, he immediately recognized the band! Turns out, we went to the same school for our undergraduate degrees, lived very close to one another and actually hung out at some of the same bars/clubs. We started naming friends and we actually knew a few of the same people. We're still trying to figure out how we never actually met or were introduced to one another since we're almost positive we've probably hung out together before. It was kind of a reminder of the small world we live in, I suppose. He seems like a pretty cool guy.

Other than that, I'm still trying to get over a cold I've had for about a month. It just won't go away! I've got a 6 mile long run this Saturday, which will probably be a tad painful because I didn't do my 5 miler last weekend. I have no excuse -- I just refused to go run outside in the weather. Truthfully, I wasn't hydrated enough to run on Saturday and then by the time Sunday rolled around it was really cold and rainy. So, 6 miles on Saturday is my goal!
